I think Gladiator hit on many levels because the main points were "Strength and Honour", which Russell Crowe embodied beautifully, but it was also a technically brilliant film because of Ridley. Wonderful film, filled with important themes of grief, loss, love, self-indulgence and redemption. Clive Owen is masterful as the widower with a past who clings to his childish ways (does his sports connection add to this?). The sons are also amazing, not easy roles and they are expert.
