From Austin Monthly, March 2009, an article about the music scene and the Pedernales Recording Studio: Among those it attracted was Russell Crowe, who rented the space in 2000 to record with his band, 30 Odd Foot of Grunts. At the time, Fletcher (Freddy Fletcher, owner of the studio) didn't know who Crowe was. "Does he have a record company?" Fletcher asked. His wife answered, "No, he's paying for it himself." He told her to get a deposit. Not long after, Fletcher took his daughter to Europe. "We're in Paris, and I see Russell Crowe's poster plastered everywhere for this Gladiator movie. And I called back and I said, "I think he's good for the money." Crowe came with a huge crew to film his sessions, and Fletcher had to hire extra people to help. One of the temps had been trying for days to get someone out to repair a broken vending machine, to no avail. Finally, someone walked in wearing what looked like a service shirt, patch and all. She launched off on the guy: "Where have you been? I've been calling you for days!" According to Fletcher, the man started laughing, and she added, "Russell Crowe's coming in here!" He answered, "Hello. I'm Russell Crowe." Material from a skating rink used more than a decade ago during the filming of the movie Mystery, Alaska, which featured Crowe, is now being used to enclose orphaned bear cubs at the Cochrane Ecological Institute. Some of the boards are now lining the small enclosure for four bear cubs under the care of the facility north of Cochrane. The material arrived a couple of weeks ago courtesy of an outdoor skating rink in Redwood Meadows, which was dismantled recently, said Shana Barbour-Welsh, who helped co-ordinate the effort. "I just called(the institute)and said, 'Do you think you could use anything that we're getting rid of?'"Barbour-Welsh said. "They were just happy to take it off our hands, which was great. So, it's the third life of this material, which is great." The rink boards are particularly useful, as they protect the wooden walls from the claws of the cubs climbing around the enclosure, says facilities manager Pat Mistero. "It's amazing,"she said, noting the facility is non-profit and that such donations are appreciated. "The stuff we reuse here -- the list can go very long." The four bear cubs were brought to the institute last month. They will be raised until they are old enough to be sent back to the wild. Mystery, Alaska was filmed in Can-more in early 1998. It's the story of a small-town amateur team that gets a chance to play against the New York Rangers. The movie stars the likes of Crowe, Burt Reynolds and Hank Azaria. In 1998, the Redwood Meadows community association bought the outdoor hockey rink used in the movie at an auction for $800. "It's been here ever since then," Barbour-Welsh said. "It's sort of at the point where it was going to need a lot of tender loving care." The rink was dismantled so it could be upgraded with more modern materials, said Ron Goerzen, former president of the Redwood Meadows community association. Hockey glass from the rink was also transported to the ecological institute Thursday. Mistero said it might be used to protect some trees in a two-hectare enclosure that will house the cubs when they get older. I know it'll probably never happen but it would really make my day for Russell to do a cameo. We know they love Russell and he's been mentioned several times over the years.
