From Austin Monthly, March 2009, an article about the music scene and the Pedernales Recording Studio: Among those it attracted was Russell Crowe, who rented the space in 2000 to record with his band, 30 Odd Foot of Grunts. At the time, Fletcher (Freddy Fletcher, owner of the studio) didn't know who Crowe was. "Does he have a record company?" Fletcher asked. His wife answered, "No, he's paying for it himself." He told her to get a deposit. Not long after, Fletcher took his daughter to Europe. "We're in Paris, and I see Russell Crowe's poster plastered everywhere for this Gladiator movie. And I called back and I said, "I think he's good for the money." Crowe came with a huge crew to film his sessions, and Fletcher had to hire extra people to help. One of the temps had been trying for days to get someone out to repair a broken vending machine, to no avail. Finally, someone walked in wearing what looked like a service shirt, patch and all. She launched off on the guy: "Where have you been? I've been calling you for days!" According to Fletcher, the man started laughing, and she added, "Russell Crowe's coming in here!" He answered, "Hello. I'm Russell Crowe." In Austin's renowned recording studios, you never know who you'll run into. - Thanks, Jeanninebecks
