DEAN WIDDERS hopes to bring in a secret weapon to help Castleford - Gladiator star Russell Crowe.

Tigers centre Widders has been big mates with the Hollywood superstar for years. The pair share a passion for rugby league and also for various charities close to their hearts.

And Widders admits he'd get a real kick out of seeing Cas fans rub shoulders with his famous buddy.

Widders also hopes the Oscar winner can weave some of his magic on the Tigers' play-off push.

He said: "Russell is shooting his new film, Robin Hood, in the south of London. I've talked to him a few times and he's hoping to get to Castleford to see one of our games.

"He's pretty busy with shooting but it would be really good for the fans if they got to watch a match with him."

Kiwi-born Crowe, whose grandfather was from Wrexham in north Wales, is famous around the globe for his acting and wild off-set antics. He's also well-known in the rugby league world as co-owner of South Sydney Rabbitohs.

But Super League fans may not realise that Widders is also famous in Australia as one of their most fascinating sportsmen.

For here is a player who has had dinner with the Prime Minister and enjoyed lunch with the Governor-General.

He is also an Ambassador on a national council in Australia and has won a major award for his work helping children.

Now he's settled in Castleford with his wife and three children, Widders wants to kick off similar charity projects over here.

Passionate

He said: "I first met Russell when I signed for the Rabbitohs and we've been good mates ever since. It's not just rugby league that we have in common. We share the same views about community, helping kids and the responsibility players have to these kids.

"He is equally passionate about giving something back to communities and giving kids something to aspire to. Life is about trying to help people and improve their living conditions and opportunities.

"Rugby league players have a huge responsibility because kids look up to us and it's important that we put something back."

Widders, 29, is an Ambassador for the National Aboriginal Sports Corporation and a member of the Federal Government's National Indigenous Council.

His efforts won him the NRL's Ken Stephen's Medal for his work with children - something he wants to carry on in Britain.

The 6ft 2in, 16-stone star added: "I want to set up a reading programme, hopefully with the help of the RFL or possibly sponsors.

"In Sydney we sent books out to kids, got players to visit schools and encouraged kids to go online and talk about what they had read.

"You get a lot out of helping youngsters, especially those from tough areas where they don't have a lot to look forward to.

"I like trying to make a difference. Rugby league has given me a greater voice and an insight into politics and how you can give people opportunities."

Cas coach Terry Matterson admits the club signed Widders for his playing ability and his excellent off-field work. Matterson said: "He is a very good influence and role model and that's what we want. He doesn't drink or smoke and is a character you can respect."

Widders may consider a life in politics when his playing days are over but his first aim is to establish himself after a recent torn calf muscle.

He said: "I'm back playing after missing seven weeks. You don't want that in your first year at a new club but I'm looking to regain form."

Cas ended a run of five Super League defeats with a win last weekend at Huddersfield but they slumped to a 22-20 home defeat against Catalans Dragons last night.

Widders added: "We've missed captain Ryan Hudson and playmaker Brent Sherwin but a top eight slot is still very much on."

That three points between the Broncos and the Bunnies is a problem; the Broncos haven't had their second bye yet, so then they will get another 2 points for that. That means two and a half games behind the Broncos. I don't see why the Broncos are at #9....unless it has to do with the + / - points. If the Sea Eagles and Panthers both lose the next couple of games, that would be good all round....except for the Sea Eagles and Panthers, of course.

next game is on the 4th of july at anz stadium at 5:30pm, which means a start time of 8:30am in newcastle upon tyne, 3:30am in new york, 2:30am in illinois, 1:30am in utah, 12:30am in california.

KICKOFF - We're underway! The Rabbitohs will have first use of the ball.

1 min: A knock-on from Roy Asotasi gives the Tigers a scrum feed 32 metres out.

3 min: TRY Wests Tigers
Taniela Tuiaki posts first points after leaping over the top of Nathan Merritt to claim a cross-field kick and falling over the line for the try. Benji Marshall adds the extras.
Wests Tigers 6-0

6 min: Nathan Merritt takes a cut-out pass that was flat at best before breaking through a couple of tackles and heading for the posts - he's caught by the defence just before the line, then the Tigers give away a penalty to keep the pressure on.

9 min: The penalty count is now 3-0 in favour of the Rabbitohs - the latest penalty will give them a new attacking set 20 metres out from the Tigers line.

10 min: John Sutton fumbles the ball as the Rabbitohs try spreading the ball across their backline, and the Tigers are off the hook for now.

13 min: Shannon Gallant claims a chip-kick on his own line and tries to launch a counter attack but his inside pass to Tim Moltzen is fumbled - Fetuli Talanoa picks up the scraps and heads straight back towards the tryline before the Tigers defence catches up to him.

14 min: TRY South Sydney Rabbitohs
Luke Capewell puts a pretty soft fend on Benji Marshall before strolling across the line for the Rabbitohs first try. Chris Sandow's conversion attempt bounces in off the uprights.
6 all

18 min: A high bomb from John Sutton looks promising but both Jamie Simpson and Nathan Merritt jump for it (along with Taniela Tuiaki), they all get in each others way and the ball dribbles forward.

19 min: The Tigers are awarded their first penalty of the night.

20 min: TRY Wests Tigers
Robbie Farah hits the short-side with a nice pass from dummy half to Taniela Tuiaki only 5 metres out from the Rabbitohs line. Tuiaki doesn't have any space to work in but he still manages to get across the line for his second try. Benji Marshall slots the extras from the touchline.
Wests Tigers 12-6

24 min: Robbie Farah dummies his way through the line and makes a break upfield but can't link up with any support before the Rabbitohs defence shuts him down.

26 min: VIDEO REF - possible Tigers try ...

26 min: TRY Wests Tigers
Corey Payne takes a pass from Robbie Farah right under the posts and spins his way through a couple of soft tackles before getting the ball down on the line. Benji Marshall converts.
Wests Tigers 18-6

30 min: TRY Wests Tigers
Gareth Ellis chimes into a backline play and creates some space for Taniela Tuiaki to squeeze across in the corner - that's his hat trick! The Rabbitohs are looking very tired all of a sudden. Benji Marshall misses the conversion attempt.
Wests Tigers 22-6

33 min: The Rabbitohs have replaced Chris Sandow with no sign of an injury. Issac Luke has come on, and Craig Wing will move to #7.

37 min: TRY South Sydney Rabbitohs
Some wide passing across the backline gives Colin Best a bit of space to work in - he gets away from Blake Ayshford before finding Luke Capewell with a nice inside pass and Capewell gets across in the corner. Issac Luke goes close with the conversion attempt but it hits the uprights and bounces away.
Wests Tigers 22-10

39 min: TRY Wests Tigers
The Tigers try a short-ish kickoff that's allowed to bounce, Blake Ayshford gets to the ball first and passes to Tim Moltzen who runs the rest of the way to score a pretty remarkable try. Conversion attempt by Benji Marshall unsuccessful.

A break from Taniela Tuiaki gets the Tigers into attacking position, and it finishes with some fast hands and a nice offload from Tim Moltzen seeing Blake Ayshford get into a gap and scoring in the corner. Benji Marshall adds the extras from the touchline.
Wests Tigers 32-10

48 min: Roy Asotasi tries to spark something out wide but the ball is lost forward right on halfway. He makes up for the error by forcing the Tigers into touch on the first play after the scrum. Meanwhile, Jason Taylor gets a hearty "boo" from the crowd when he appears on the big screens.

49 min: Asotasi comes up with another fumble, and the Tigers start rolling upfield once more.

50 min: TRY Wests Tigers
A nice last-tackle kick into open space catches the Rabbitohs asleep and the Tigers chasers get to the ball first, earning a repeat set at the same time. It only takes them one more play to take advantage though - another Robbie Farah pass to the shortside finds Beau Ryan and he crosses untouched for a pretty soft try. Benji Marshall misses the conversion attempt.
Wests Tigers 36-10

53 min: Robbie Farah nearly pulls off a 40/20 but he had his foot just on the wrong side of the line when he kicked it.

55 min: John Sutton puts in a horrible last tackle kick that sails out on the full.

57 min: TRY South Sydney Rabbitohs
Luke Capewell throws a bad pass from dummy-half that bounces along aimlessly before Chris Sandow (who has just returned to the field in place of John Sutton) picks up the loose ball and puts Nathan Merritt into a gap for a surprisingly easy try. Sandow adds the extra two.
Wests Tigers 36-16

61 min: Daine Laurie collars Michael Crocker with a lazy high tackle, it looks worse than it really was.

62 min: TRY South Sydney Rabbitohs
Benji Marshall catches a Chris Sandow kick on his own tryline before heading out to the wing and trying to link up with his outside men but he makes a meal of it and Luke Capewell comes away with the loose ball before diving across in the corner for his third try. Chris Sandow misses the conversion attempt.

64 min: Chris Sandow tries a 40/20 but the ball takes a wicked bounce and stays in the field of play - somehow Jamie Simpson gets to the ball first but can't link up with any support and the Tigers come away with the scraps.

68 min: Luke Capewell drops a Tigers bomb thanks to some good pressure from Gareth Ellis - the Tigers will go back onto the attack.

68 min: TRY Wests Tigers
Skando scores! It was a pretty simple play, taking the pass from dummy half and charging for the line before somehow getting the ball down despite the attention of three Rabbitohs defenders. Benji Marshall adds the extras.
Wests Tigers 42-20

70 min: Bryce Gibbs runs 70 metres from the kickoff. Taniela Tuiaki goes close to the tryline on the next play but tries a miracle pass infield and the Rabbitohs come up with the ball.

73 min: Colin Best and Issac Luke combine to find some space up the touchline but Luke's final pass is fumbled forward as he tried to link up with some support.

76 min: TRY Wests Tigers
Michael Crocker tries a chip-and-chase and comes up with the ball but knocks it on when trying to link up with Chris Sandow on his inside. Shannon Gallant picks up the loose ball on his own 30 metre line and puts the after-burners on, running all the way up the touchline to score. Benji Marshall converts.
Wests Tigers 48-20

78 min: The Rabbitohs are penalised for being in front of the kicker from the restart.

79 min: Benji Marshall tries a kick for Taniela Tuiaki out wide but Luke Capewell claims the ball to spoil the chance.

80 min: TRY Wests Tigers
There's the 50! Blake Ayshford finishes off a pretty basic backline movement by finding a gaping hole and crossing untouched for his second try. Benji Marshall converts.

The fulltime siren puts an end to the slaughter - the Tigers were simply too good for a badly out-of-sorts Rabbitohs side
