Get the Ridster to direct....wooo! hooo!!!! "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, Dream, Discover." ~Mark Twain~ |

Ditto, Ro!
the food that is on display looks much too good given the lack of fridges; Oooooo, right, that gray slop the crew ate looked yummy. Not!!
Same-sex sex is such a hot topic, showing that in the film would have totally skewed the focus. It would never have gotten back on track. In any film, as in any book, you choose what to show and what not to show, keeping what enhances your story and chucking what does not. I think it's odd that we have to keep saying "Not a documentary!" for quite a few of Russell's films. Do other films get harangued for their level of realism the way his do? |

Spree, bless you for posting those mighty gorgeous pics of Capt Aubrey.
I can only say one thing... Crowe as Aubrey is really really
HANDSOME!
Boy, how I wish that there'll be a sequel to this movie.![]() ![]() And Ro, thanks for finding that blog review.

and no one seems to ever need to go to the toilet. In fact we do see one poor freezing fellow on the loo so we know at least one of them needs to and it didn't look "too good to be true" to me.
~sheesh, we don't need to see every detail of peoples' lives in the movies for them to feel real. JellyD

" Now, just imagine how those of us felt who were reading the series before the movie came out I am one of the people who read the 20 ( ! ) books before the film came out, and I remember imagining many scenes, of any kind.....especially the romantic ones with Sophie, the wife, or other female characters with whom Jack Aubrey has adventures in the books. When I saw the film, the first one I saw being a fan of Russell ( I becalme a fan with ABM) , I liked it very much but I can“t help saying that I missed and I miss that part of the captain, the romantic one because le liked women a lot! It would have been nice to put a bit of " romantic spice " in the film, I think. |

spreesmom....well, I never saw Glad on the big screen , so come and have a cry with me.
Roheryn, thanks for the blog thingy. I smiled at: "continuation of my Russell Crowe festivities"....LOL, oh, yes, this person likes Russell Ira. It made me crack up. Russell makes so many faces.. when hes concentrating with his mouth and lips sort of tight.. look at that violin pic and the one before it. Great pics, Jack is lovely. I'm probably goin' to the hot place for the thoughts I've had about the sea captain.. I havent read the books and probably wont..I dont read much fiction, I like non fiction, like travel books etc.

Wendy30 wrote:but but but --- if it helps, they're very accurately written historical novels. o'brian went to great pains to keep the history as correct as he could while taking creative liberties with his fictional characters. give the first book a whirl - i'll bet you get hooked! becks you can't eat your pride or cleanse your soul of what is you -

I like the comments about the sound of M&C - that's one thing that Peter Weir does *very* well. I love the very beginning of the movie with just the
sounds of the waves to put you right in the moment. Hmmmm, maybe I need to watch M&C again...

just about to finish #8 ('the ionian mission') and then to embark into 'treasons harbour'. it's such a lovely fantasy to be
cruising and fighting around the world with jack, stephen, pullings, bonden, killick, mowett and all the other hands aboard ship in the early
1800's! so of course i just had to watch 'master & commander' again, since i'm now living in a house with a bose
digital sound system attached to the tv (sadly, an average-sized screen, but i'll manage), and no neighbors to annoy.
"heaven, i'm in heaven"...
yee-hah! i love gettin' jacked! becks i think i'll take up swimming again...

what's the difference between a 'stand-in' and a 'stunt double'? i thought they were the same thing until i read (carefully) the end credits this evening. becks you can't eat your pride or cleanse your soul of what is you -

A stand-in takes the place of the actor (David Oliver for Russell) when scenes are being set up for filming, a stunt double does the stunts deemed too risky
for the actor.
I think I'm feeling a litle visit with Jack again this weekend. And those 21 volumes are staring at me from my shelf. I have so many other books to read but the M&C canon is just wonderful.
