I thought the movie was really funny, and that his impression (he said publicly that he was doing one) was funny but not real mean. Maybe a little. :)
Thanks,
Izzy

I know this post should probably be in the other thread, but I've been dying to ask what everyone thought of Robert Downey Jr.'s "Russell
impression" in Tropic Thunder. Is there another thread somewhere where you already discuss this? I've been away for a while.

I loved Tropic Thunder and thought that Robert Downey Jr. was fantastic and hilarious. There definitely was a lot of Russell in the character, but some of
Daniel Day Lewis as well - "I don't drop character until the DVD commentary is done." However, in a weird way, I thought that the impression was
both a take-off on and an homage to Russell at the same time. Some of it was about how much commitment he puts into getting a character right.
Just thinking about that movie makes me laugh. OMG - "I don't read scripts. Scripts read me."

It was a pretty funny movie and RDJ was brilliant. I bought it for hubby for Christmas and I bought the 2 disc version cause I wanted to see all the extras,
LOL! Downey made it pretty clear in several interviews that he'd thought of Russell as well as DDL and Colin Farrell as he was shaping the character but
that it was an homage, and he also was adamant about how much he admired Russell's talent. I do hope the two of them get to work together some day.

Cool, thanks ladies. I loved this in the theater and I'm glad its out on DVD now for a second look. I guess I read the quote wrong. RJD said he wasn't
"channeling" Russ, but it was a homage. Better description.

Tropic Thunder is great fun! LOL!!
RDJ is a riot. Channeling Russ or not, I think he's amazing in it. Totally makes
me LOL when he said something like "I don't get out of my character until the DVD commentary." Bwaaahaahhaaaa!!!

I loved Downey in Tropic Thunder (not so much the other guys). Imitation - or homage (semantic BS if you ask me) is the sincerest form of flattery right? This
ad cracks me up.

Sincerely hope to see RDJ gets recognition come Oscar time. I remember years ago, he was so good in "Chaplin." Such a versatile actor.

Mara!
Awesome Oscar ad. Thanks for posting that! I'm glad to hear that none of the smart ladies around here got bent outta shape over RJD in TT. As for the other actors, my boyfriend said that it was "Jack Black's triumphant return to supporting roles." :) Hugs, Iz |

imitation is the sincerest form of flattery - how could RDJ imitate Russ if no one would know what he was doing??????
I got a great kick out of TT - takes nerve to make a flick like that! Once, always, Russell Crowe "beauty...delight...passion" no contemporary actor is better at conveying an uncluttered personal integrity and nobility of spirit. "a very honest performer with a physical charisma and set of technical skills that make him one of the best actors of his generation" |
