Nasser Hussain appeared clearly surprised by his own excitement to be doing his commentary stint with Russell Crowe, Hollywood actor of films such as "Gladiator", "A Beautiful" and "Cinderella Man", and Crowe certainly stole the show from Shane Warne sitting beside him.
Shane Warne has been rather chirpy behind the microphone but it was Crowe who came across as a thinking commentator with some rather definitive words. Although merely a spectator at Wimbledon 2009 when he was at Centre Court during Federer's fifteenth Grand Slam title battle with Andy Roddick, here he appeared to know what he was doing in the commentary box. He quickly took the opportunity to ask of Warne, "What happened to Australia? Their lack of ruthlessness was evident on the final day of the first Test at Cardiff. Don't Australians usually have the clamp on the opposition's throat?" It sounded even more ruthless coming from his deep, booming, not to mention seductive, voice.
When asked about where he was an avid cricket watcher, Crowe admitted to being a traditionalist and not someone entirely gaga over the ODIs or Twenty20's. He stated it was the five day game that captivated him and while he could not always come down to the ground, he followed it religiously.
Crowe's commentary stint eventually ended when bad light halted the second day's play of the second Test of the Ashes at Lord's. Nasser Hussain was not wrong, although it was stated it as much tongue in cheek, when he stated that Crowe was certainly a better looking and interesting commentator than former England coach and witty wisecrack behind the mic, David Lloyd. Dare we say, he topped the presence of Queen Elizabeth II in many ways.
But Crowe had showed enough that he could just as easily slip into the role of a commentator and none of it scripted. Once again he had held his audience in awe.

but it's a nice blurb about our guy anyway. it's comforting to know he has a potential career to fall back on, just in case his present day job doesn't work out for him.

It's not every day you get to meet Her Majesty The Queen, Prince Philip, Robin Hood, Captain Jack Aubrey and the Roman gladiator Maximus and have Australia 156-8 at Lord's so I'll mark down Friday July 16 as one of the most special of my career so far.

I don't know what the exact protocol is here - someone asked me for my impressions of the great lady and I told them: 'Sorry, I don't do impressions.'

But the word that sprang to mind when we were all introduced to her on the outfield at lunch was 'cute'.

After close of play, I was presented with a framed scorecard and photo of my century here in the first Test of the summer against West Indies and I happened to spot one of my favourite actors, Russell Crowe, on a tour of the famous old pavilion.

I know he's a Hollywood star and a busy man and I didn't want to badger him. But, come on, what else is a boy like me going to do in that situation?

'Excuse me, Mr Crowe,' I said. 'My name's Ravi. I wonder if it might be possible to have my picture taken with you.'

'No problem,' said Maximus as we stood side by side and the flash went off. 'Good luck.' Me and Russell Crowe. Awesome.

Not only is Russell Crowe one of the hottest stars in Hollywood but he is also a generous gent.Crowe, who is currently filming Robin Hood in the United Kingdom, helped out a boom mic operator after she lost her car in a fire.

38-year-old Denise Yarde received £5,000 (roughly $8,200) from Crowe after he heard about her ordeal. At first he cracked a joke about her situation but Yarde set him straight!

Denise quipped: "Well I suppose it's OK for you Russell. You've probably never had to worry about finding five grand for a new car."

He felt bad because he had not meant to hurt her feelings so he handed her a wad of cash so she could buy a proper car. Denise purchased a 2007 Saab and very graciously gave the big star a huge hug!

A film insider said: "Denise's job involves dressing like an extra and getting right in the middle of the action to pick up the dialogue, so without her there was no filming for a few hours.

"By the time she got to work everyone knew what had happened and she came in for a bit of mickey-taking for driving an old banger.

"Russell joined in with some of it and she took it in good heart. But at one point, after she said about him never having to worry about buying a new car, Russell went quiet and everyone thought that was the end of it.

"Then later in the afternoon he sought Denise out and gave her the five grand.

"It was a lovely gesture by Russell, who is known on the set for his generosity."

I don't think he intentionally made fun of her but he more than made up for it.

Gotta love this guy!!

I realize she was upset and all, but that struck me as being rather rude and insensitive (how could she not know he'd come up from nothing?), and probably hurt his feelings a bit.

Which makes his subsequent act of generosity that much nicer.

I felt much the same way, Catherine, especially since the article said that other members of the crew were ribbing her, but only Russell was singled out. On the other hand, I think the Aussies and the Kiwis tend to be a bit rougher in their teasing, all in good fun, than people from other places are used to. I saw a bit of that when I was there. She might have been reacting to that. I think there have been other incidents where Russell has felt bad later and has done something nice to apologize.

I felt the same way about Denise's remark, but i bet she wishes she could have swolled her tongue, after he came back with that wonderful jesture. like my mother always used to say , "THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK."

Yes, the Gladiator star had walked into the Ralph Lauren hospitality tent at the All England Club in Wimbledon looking every inch the movie star, but frankly that was no reason for my wife to dribble. Obviously not, but then the rules are somewhat different for women.

As we soon discovered, Crowe turned out to be delightful company - even pretending to flirt with the female guests - winning over Woody Allen and his wife Soon-Yi, who were also guests of Mr Lauren. An invitation to lunch with the legendary American fashion designer before the men's singles final at Wimbledon has become the most sought-after ticket of the season. As we know, while we Brits don't really care for tennis for 50 weeks of the year (which is obviously why we produce so few players of Grand Slam quality), for two weeks in the summer we become completely obsessed, even if we can't play ourselves. I hope he is alright and won't delay filming. from the latest pictures he looks fine. i can't understand why journalist can't check before they print, Russell should have won 2awards or even 3, but he only won one Sandra.

TWO-time Oscar winner Russell Crowe has injured himself on the set of his latest film when a stunt "went slightly wrong".
The 45-year-old actor, who is known for doing his own stunts and throwing himself into his roles, badly bruised his heels last Thursday after jumping from a port cullis (I'll explain that in a minute) in an action scene in Robin Hood.

The mishap occurred during a scene in which his character and cohorts had a French castle under siege. "As you do!" Crowe told me in an email overnight.

Even though he's been in a "a great deal of pain", the injury has not affected filming and Crowe - who spent the weekend with his family in London and managed to limp around the hallowed ground at Lords for the latest Ashes series - will be back on set for more action and adventure this week.

"I start another fight scene Tuesday. Hoping things will have settled down by then," he wrote.

Crowe is starring as Robin Hood in the film being helmed by his good mate, Ridley Scott, who directed Crowe to his first Academy Award for best actor in the brilliant Gladiator in 2001. It is the fifth film on which they have worked together, the last being the 2008 Body of Lies co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Crowe's Maid Marian is Cate Blanchett.

It's not the first time the Kiwi-born star has been hurt while making a movie: he suffered a shoulder injury while filming the Ron Howard-directed Cinderella Man in 2004.

And what exactly is a port cullis? It's an iron or wooden grate that protects the entrances to medieval castles and forts, preventing invasion by raiders and pillagers.

Robin Hood is due to be released in 2010.

The way these Ashes series go, I fully expected to still be chewing my nails later into the afternoon - so as these games go this was almost a comfortable victory for Andrew Strauss and his team. No surprise that the Test Match Special 'Champagne Moment' went to Andrew Flintoff for the moment he bowled Peter Siddle to bring up his five wickets.

There was an amazing array of people at Lord's during the dramatic five days and we were fortunate to feature several of them on Test Match Special. Perhaps the most surprising visitor to the TMS box was Hollywood superstar Russell Crowe taking a break from filming a new version of Robin Hood.

He was introduced on air by Jonathan Agnew with the words "we are joined now by the cousin of the match referee". Although Russell has lived in Australia since his early years, he was born in New Zealand and is related to both Martin and Jeff Crowe who were both at Lord's - one part of the MCC's World Cricket committee, the other working as one of the match officials.

Russell Crowe told Aggers that it was his first visit to the home of cricket. "We've been talking about coming here for 20 years ever since Martin was the junior cricketer in the year and it was a great thrill to walk through the Long Room together". Russell revealed that one of his prized possessions is a photograph of Jeff and Martin with a glass of champagne on one of the dressing-room balconies after a famous New Zealand win here.

He also told Jonathan about his cricket pedigree: "I bowl very sluggish medium pace... I have a cricket field on my farm with nets and a pavilion. But I was never going to become a cricketer with Jeff and Martin in my family already I didn't want to become another Trevor Chappell". But he revealed he does run a family team. "The last time we played was at my wedding... we had six Crowes in the team. It was a four-day wedding and we were playing cricket by the second day."
Although he clearly loved his first experience of Lord's, Russell was not impressed with the performance of the Australian side. "I'm surprised by their lack of ruthlessness both here and in Cardiff where they couldn't close the game... I'm surprised they were allowed their passports to get out of the country."

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World has all the elements of the kind of movie that keeps studio heads up at night: it's literary (based on the Patrick O'Brian seafaring series), period (Napoleonic), expensive (close to $150 million), packed with action (swords, pistols, rifles and cannons) and VFX (ships at sea under fire). That's why, even though the Napoleonic adventure movie looks like a success, grossing $209.5 million worldwide, it was a nail biter for Twentieth Century Fox co-chairman Tom Rothman at the time. (He took on partners in the venture, and had to push back the release to get the FX finished.) The well-reviewed awards contender (nominated for ten Oscars, it won two) barely made its production and marketing costs back. (Here's my NYT story from 2003.)

It makes sense that Russell Crowe (post-State Of Play) would want to return to the juicy role of Captain Jack Aubrey in what should be a big adventure franchise. A script is in the works based on the 11th novel set in the Caribbean, dealing with Aubrey's illegimate son, a priest.

But this sort of heavy-duty period movie about ships at sea is tough to execute: Master and Commander had finicky Australian Peter Weir at the helm. Rothman wooed him by laying a mock captain's sword on his lap and asking him to take command of the HMS Surprise. Weir has been unwilling to return for a sequel.

Fox says it's early days yet, with no deals in place.

I don't know. Somehow I have to agree that a story like Aubrey/Maturin seafaring adventure which is considered to be classic for "serious" adults would be a tough sell in the glory days of comics like these days. Sad.
