Now he lends his voice to The Secret Millionaire - why? The internet's biggest movie star database, IMDb, sums up Russell Crowe's demeanour in blunt terms. After a detailed list of his achievements, including being an Academy Award winner and commanding up to $20 million a film, is a subheading: "Trademark". Under it are just two words: "fiery temper". This reporter encountered the cantankerous side of Crowe as far back as 1993, before he'd registered a blip on the Hollywood radar. Arriving on the Dinner Plain set of his family adventure film, The Silver Brumby, a tired Crowe presented as obnoxious, prickly and unco-operative when asked to comply with a simple, pre-arranged interview and photo request. Crowe, it seems, had got what he was probably hoping for - a bit of a stoush - and so did we - interview and shot of Crowe, nursing his cattle dog, on horseback. He admitted his earlier attitude was a result of his trust being difficult to win. "You have to be careful, because people will 'nice' you to death in this business (then stab you in the back)," Crowe explained. "You've got to keep your head screwed on." Crowe, who lends his vocal talents to the narrator's role on Channel 9's new factual series The Secret Millionaire, recently gave the impression nothing much has changed about his approach to surviving the financially lucrative, but cut-throat movie business. On the set of the $200 million movie Robin Hood, Crowe suggested anger and honour were qualities that went hand in hand. "Are they (anger and honour) mutually exclusive?" the star of Gladiator, The Cinderella Man and A Beautiful Mind asks. "I mean, quite frankly, if you are going to be an honourable man in this day and age you've got to have a little anger in you because there is a lot of bulls--- out there." That Crowe has a well-developed social conscience has filled far less column space over the years than his run-ins with the media and the law - including a much-publicised phone-throwing incident. In a lunch break while shooting Robin Hood, for example, he ducked into the Cancer Research UK charity shop in Berkshire and donated $2000. This followed his involvement in Channel 9's bushfire relief appeal and an offer to help with the building of a community centre in Marysville. Crowe, 45, has a simple philosophy when it comes to charity work. "I do my bit to improve the world but I think it's important to get things done on the quiet." He adds: "Currently I'm part of a group that includes ex-Chicago Bulls basketballer Luc Longley, the city of Coffs Harbour and Melbourne businessman Andrew Watt, raising money for the people of Marysville who were badly affected by the Victorian bushfires." The Secret Millionaire, premiering tomorrow, follows one Australian millionaire each week going undercover in a disadvantaged community. After 10 days, the millionaire hands over a cheque to a worthy recipient. Crowe says of The Secret Millionaire: "I recently spent six months in England (on Robin Hood) and would occasionally come across the UK version of the show. I found it compelling viewing. It got me. I think at its core the show (The Secret Millionaire) lets people into the lives of those less fortunate than themselves. Anything that encourages people to engage in helping others has to be a good thing. The fee from my voice-over work was donated by Channel 9 to Souths Cares, the charity arm of (Crowe's) South Sydney Rugby League Club." Crowe says the biggest misconception about his fame and fortune is that he had some kind of advantage to start with. "In their case, hard work didn't connect to material success, but they taught me that you make your own luck." You should be proud of yourself, Russ. Because of the poor ratings of the Bouris-hosted Apprentice, Channel Nine brought forward the first episode of the Russell Crowe-hosted Secret Millionaire last night. The show takes wealthy people from their lavish surroundings and puts them in hard-up neighbourhoods. But it seems that Crowe did not look too far to find well-off people wanting to show their compassionate sides. The guest on last night's show was the property developer and owner of Trivest, Albert Bertini, who is helping redevelop the retail and commercial space at Crowe's beloved Souths Leagues Club. Bertini co-owns High Concept Commercial with Crowe's fellow Rabbitoh owner Peter Holmes a Court, a firm that paid $7 million for the club in Chalmers Street, Redfern, in 2007. Another guest on Rusty's show will be Derek Leddie, who sold his market research firm The Leading Edge to Photon Group for $15 million in 2004. The goatie-bearded Leddie lives near Crowe on Finger Wharf, Woolloomooloo. But the show's third guest, Peter Bond, the managing director of Linc Energy, has denied any previous links to Crowe. ''I don't know big Russ,'' Bond told CBD . ''I don't even go for the Bunnies,'' the supporter of the St George-Illawarra Dragons threw in. But for his part on the show, Bond was still made to hang out in the heart of Rabbitoh's territory, spending 10 days in Redfern.

Indeed, a few members of the rugby league community have been left wondering if he ever had one after the Oscar-winning actor unleashed his legal attack dogs over a fictitious and satirical book about a fake, fading, fat footy legend in which Crowe had a minor role. The Johnny Larkin Diaries, by the sporting writer Adrian Proszenko, tells the story of the fictional football legend Johnny "Cockroach" Larkin, described as "one of rugby league's most colourful and controversial characters" who is lured out of retirement, complete with "bung knee and bulging waistline". In the book, Larkin has one final shot at premiership glory to play for Crowe's beloved Rabbitohs. As a courtesy, Proszenko sent an unfinished manuscript to Crowe with a message that he hoped the actor would see the novel for the "good humour" it was intended to provide. Crowe failed to find anything to laugh about and summoned his lawyers, who fired off a legal letter threatening litigation action if the book was published. Proszenko eventually succumbed, but instead of ditching the book, he reworked it - sans Crowe. And while the likes of H.G. Nelson and Tommy Raudonikis saw the joke in the book and even wrote highly entertaining forewords, Crowe remained unamused. The actor's threats of litigation resulted in Proszenko pulping and rewriting more than 30 pages of the book - effectively deleting any reference to Crowe. The Johnny Larkin Diaries will be published though Allen & Unwin on October 26. PS was assured this week by the actor's Sydney mates that Crowe, currently in Pittsburgh shooting the thriller The Next Three Days, really does have a sense of humour. But even Crowe has admitted his sense of humour is something of an - ahem - acquired taste. He told The Independent in London last year: "It's just so convenient to take my sense of humour and pretend that it's anger, because my kind of dry humour doesn't go across very well. Sarcasm doesn't work on the page. But I can assure you that I'm not an angry man. I think I'm beyond caring about misconceptions." Hmmm, really?

And why the wringing of hands over this author having to rewrite 30 pages to remove all mention of Russ? Any author worth his salt accepts the fact that rewrites are the rule when it comes to getting their book published, and it's just par for the course when dealing with any professional editor. This author took a chance with his story by including Russell in the plot, and it wasn't ever really his decision as to whether or not Russell would approve, regardless of the author's opinion that it was divinely inspired. Just another opportunity for the media to once again print something nasty, and don't feel too bad for this hapless author - he's getting a lot of free publicity for his book because of all this. Wouldn't surprise me Cindy. I think Errol is probably one of the best. It's certainly a subject Russell knows all about. He's a busy, busy man.
