In 1991 I was flatting with the actor Steve Bastoni (Neighbours, Police Rescue) and he was good friends with Russell Crowe. I had come to live with Steve as I had just separated from my first wife and found the room for rent on offer in the newspaper, it was affordable and close to where I worked.

To say the very least it was a lot of fun living with Steve. Steve took pity on me as I had not been out on the town for years and he wanted to help reconnect me to the Sydney social scene. Going out on the town with actors (I am a nurse) was an amazing experience. When you go out on the town with one actor its amazing how many others you bump into.

On the occasions that I went out on the town in Sydney with Russell and Steve they were certainly memorable and it's true that the more popular celebs don't have to cue to get into night clubs.

I can see why Russell has over the years obtained the bad boy label but having the opportunity to get to know him a bit I feel that when you get to know him he is not a bad bloke, it's just that he has a shorter then average fuse and likes his privacy. This is what makes him who he is so I believe we should embrace Russell for who he is and not ever look to expect him to change into someone more user friendly for the media.

Actors are artists and like many artists have their eccentricities that make them who they are, so to try and change Russell into Mr Nice Guy you risk changing the creative genius that has over the years has brought us so many outstanding performances in his many movie roles.

I remember Russell had just done the movie The Crossing and had hooked up with Dannielle Spencer (his now wife). He was very excited about the movie "Romper Stomper" which was in the pipeline to be made and I remember how much preparation and research Russell put into his Romper Stomper role which is now recognized as being the one where Hollywood discovered him. Sad though about Russell's co-star Daniel Pollock (1969 - 1992), he had so much tallent.

From what I have seen great actors are made and not born and there seems to be a lot of hard work and persistence required to make it in the big time and some luck landing the smaller roles that lead onto the bigger ones.

Russell has come a long way since I knew him in 18 years ago in 1991 and I salute and congratulate him on his career success, happy marriage and two happy healthy kids. Russell's success didn't just happen overnight he went out and worked bloody hard and never gave up on his dream until it became his reality.

Steve Bastoni was a great flat mate and great to hang out with, we shared our house with a model (sounds like a sitcom I know), I could tell you some funny stories about Steve but I'll save that for another time.

I consider this time in my life as my 15 minute brush with fame.
