To get to attend a thing like that in the first place, and then to have Gabaldon critique your work! I think I would be walking on air right about now if I was you...... Now you HAVE to write a novel! I've read Brooks, and I used to read lots and lots of fantasy, but his particular style leaves me cold, so after one or two, I didn't read any more. His Shanarra series seemed very derivative to me. If you read his books, you'll have to tell us what you think. What is dangerous about extremists is not that they are extreme, but that they are intolerant. Have to admit that I'm still enjoying going back and rereading all the Anne Rice Vampire novels and the Mayfair Witches. I haven't read much fantasy but I've seen good comments about Diana Gabaldon from the ladies here over the years, and I always thought I'd have to start reading her work but never got around to it. What I have to figure out now is a) if I actually have any stories to tell (my biggest doubt...I don't have a head stuffed with ideas) and b) if I can find the self-discipline - which I certainly don't have now! - to actually write! And how guilty will I feel if I don't?! Oh.....and since there are a few people around here whose writing I before...you do realize that you now have no excuse? You, too, "HAVE to write a novel!" (hmmmm, MM???) I haven't read much fantasy but I've seen good comments about Diana Gabaldon maxi, her books are not fantasy. They are straight historical fiction, with the one fantastical element of time travel. And who knows about that? There are certainly enough legends about disappearances in/around stone circles to make one wonder.... And while Diana said in one of the workshops that she tries to include enough background to allow people to read any book as a stand alone - don't. Start at the beginning and if you like the first book, follow with the rest in order. They're really too dense, to skip around. The progression of Jamie and Claire's relationship, and of their part in the flow of history, is very dependent on what goes before, and that progression is fascinating. her happy, uncomplicated existence with Jamie Did the reviewer read Outlander? Sounds like you enjoyed the conference - and ITA with what's been said - of course you should continue writing. I remember the World Science Fiction conventions I went to (Chicago, Orlando, New Orleans) - very impressive to hear authors talk about their work. Of course, Sci Fi (NOT syfy and that stoopid channel likes to call itself) is teeming with wierdos, but that's part of the charm of going. I met L. Sprague deCamp at the Chicago convention, shortly before he died - he's a cousin of the deCamp family in upstate NY (where I lived for 25 years) so it was an interesting encounter. There's such a wealth of writing talent among all of you that it's always been a pleasure to read here and at the fiction sites. Once, always, Russell Crowe "beauty...delight...passion" no contemporary actor is better at conveying an uncluttered personal integrity and nobility of spirit. "a very honest performer with a physical charisma and set of technical skills that make him one of the best actors of his generation"

Have any of you ever read her books? They are not as strictly historical as DG, but they are set around the same time as the O'Brien books. Yes, it's the Napoleonic Era, but there's a twist: everyone has an Air Force, made up of dragons! I was skeptical, but I really enjoyed the first book, "His Majesty's Dragon" in which Naval captain inadvertently becomes an "aviator". But I've stalled a bit on them and feel guilty that I really ought to get back to rereading the incomparable Aubreyiad - I was on Nutmeg of Consolation when I bought an iPod Touch. That was it - now I watch video podcasts in bed instead of reading. My bad.... Something else I need to reread - Dickens "Tale of Two Cities". Why hasn't the BBC ever done this one ? They are on their umpteenth Jane Eyre, with Ellen Page.... And wouldn't Russell make a heart-breaking Sidney Carton ? [stream of consciousness rambling] I was delighted to find some clips of the 1970 Jane Eyre on YouTube, the one with Susannah York and George C. Scott. I loved this when first saw it (Jane Eyre is on my personal Top Ten Fave Books). George C. Scott was the oddest looking man and not remotely my type but somehow he was extraordinarily sexy in this.
