Good grief you are certainly right about Australia ,the movie. What a debacle,all that money that was spent something like 150 millions and Luhrman created that??? What was the old boy thinking? The story was kind of campy and disjointed at times ,almost cartoonish.Like Roger Rabbit goes to Australia. Kidman seemed flustered and off her game ,and boy did she get kicked around by the critics, such nasty reviews for Nicole. Jackman was not convincing as the Drover but the critics were more tolerant of the weak performance ..I wonder why? Thank goodness RC was not involved in Australia. If Russell had been involved it certainly would have been a different film,although working with Luhrman's vision would have been a handicap for sure. This film was supposed to be an Oscar contender but it really deserved a Razzie.

At the library, we ask people what they thought of movies that they check out, and Australia is one of those -- you either hate it or love it -- movies. Some
people just rave about it, and some people think it was terrible.
It certainly would be nice if Russell could do a film in Oz, but....I do think many times things work out for the best.....

Ditto Rusty and zazou. What a dissapointment. I was glad it was on HBO so that I finally got to see it but it should have been so much more.
Great scenery. Nice horses. Other than that it was a smack a roo let down. Story wise, acting wise, directing wise. I asked my self "how could it be this bad"? I had to make myself sit still until the end so that I would not have to watch it again to catch the whole thing. It will be one I skip over when ever I am channel surfing again. The young boy was beautiful and was a good actor but this movie was too much for him to carry on his small shoulders. It was like the director tried to make a western and had never seen a cowboy or a steer. There was some social commentary but it was not developed enough to be interesting. Maybe it was my mood but I'm glad for me that that ordeal is over.

But it was great to see Bryan Brown, David Gulpilil and Jack Thompson on the big screen again and I'll watch David Wenham in anything

Ditto to most of the above. I caught the beginning. And the end. But not the middle. Can someone who saw in the theatre tell me. Is the movie in widescreen? Or
even superwide? The composition on HBO was so clunky. I'm putting it in my Netflix queue. Not gonna bother with HBO any more.

Steph and I went to see it in a theater - gorgeous scenery
He says complete sentences, clearly enunciates (most of the time) and gives it alot of expressive gestures - sometimes in Spanish too!! Whatta boy! Bski, i have a 2 1/2 yr old great grandaughter and she is a talker as well, and what a vocabulary , and her sentences are perfect, sometimes i have to stop and look at her to see who i am talking to, and make sure she is not a midget talking to me.

not to go on about grand children, but I have noticed that younger children seem to be more vocal and accomplished than I remember - I wonder if it's the
combo of new 'baby can read' materials, baby sign language (which my grandson mastered very early) and the media exposure they get?
CJ was glued to his portable dvd player, watching Open Season - he's fluent in Wall-E and Madagascar already 
My kids were lucky we had a black & white set that got 5 channels - life has changed (duh!)

yippee! school is closed tomorrow in honor of
 veterans' day.
that means i only have to spend two or three hours at school, rather than my normal nine - out of which i'm paid for 7-1/2, and very poorly at that. i figured out a while ago that i could make more money if i collected unemployment and worked part-time someplace. but i'd miss the medical benefits - and my kids!!! i live for my kids. very gratifying the other day when a student with whom i didn't feel i had a very good rapport (not a bad rapport, just no real connection) told me she loved my class.

I spent the last two hours tutoring a couple of Native American students in our tribal office, and the 8th grader had an assignment to write a friendly letter. We talked about who and what and how it would look, and he said he wanted to write it to his math teacher since she made math fun for him and he wanted to tell her how she inspired him!!!!  ...and he did just that (I proofread his letter and helped with the
editing).. ...wish I could be a fly on the wall when she read it!!!!
Idid tell him I was sure she'd be thrilled to know of her impact on him!!! AWWWWWWWWW!! mushy moment, here!!!!

Just a quick update on my own kid - she got her first 11th grade progress report last week (she failed Geometry and Biology last semmester and received a
D in Geomerty and Health the semmester before that)...
This time around, she received a B in Geometry. She also received: ...B in Chemistry ...C in US History ...B in American Literature ...B in Choir and an A in P.E., of all things, LOL The trick is in getting her to keep it up. She's been nagging me to let her get a job, but I've told her that I need to see that she's mature enough to handle a part time job AND keep up her grades (which I don't believe she is yet at this point). I told her that she could get a job this summer, but if she wants a job this spring, I need to see her stepping up and doing things around the house without my asking first, like doing her chores and keeping her room neat without my asking. She says that she understands, but I have a feeling it's going to be a process... |

Jess, do be careful about letting her get a job. About a month ago we hired a high school senior (first job, home-schooled) and last week she had a melt down.
We still don't know all the details but her letter of resignation stated she couldn't maintain her classes and work at the same time. We've always
had high schoolers at the library and this is the first time one didn't cope so the main thing is to watch for the signs.

Isis, thanks for the head's up. I've discovered I'm pretty good at reading her, and right now it's my #1 priority to make sure she graduates
high school on schedule. I have too many acquaintences who didn't make it to their high school graduation, and years later they're still working on
getting up the guts to actually take the GED exam. I've been encouraging Natalie to enroll in junior college after high school, but that part of it will
ultimately be up to her. I figure once she realizes that the jobs available to her will require holiday and weekend hours that she'll understand the
importance of higher education. But you know teenagers - they think they know everything.
