i've kind of mushed the pix a bit to try to get the heads sort of aligned, but yes, there definitely seems to be a strong resemblance. i wonder if, when russell saw young jack downham, he thought - 'he looks like my boy!'? and how exciting for jack that he's a robin hood fan! i wonder if his mum will let him see some of russell's films to give him an idea of what he's gotten himself into? if russell becomes a mentor of sorts, we may have another superlative actor to follow some day.

Along with The Time Traveler's Guide to Medieval England I've mentioned a couple of times in this thread, I'm also reading The Sheriff of Nottingham by Richard Kluger which was said to be the book the original concept for this film was based on. From the little tidbits we've gotten so far (and from what I'm reading in the Kluger book) it looks to me like they may have still taken this book but expanded upon it, and switched a few things around, to become the story they're telling now. I'm not even sure Robin Hood will show up in this story because it is supposed to be based on historical fact and Robin, sadly, is only a legend.

So far Russell's Robin Hood could very well be the Undersheriff/Sheriff in the book. He has just come from the war in France and he is the good guy. I'm not saying that Russell is the Sheriff, I'm saying that the character/demeanor of his Robin Hood, reminds me very much of the character/demeanor of man who is the Sheriff in the book. I hope I've not confused the issue too much. The writing in this book is fantastic, let me give an example of the prose:

It is 1208 and King Richard has died. Undersheriff Philip Mark becomes the crown's chief officer at Notthingam Castle. Philip who is married with two little girls, is slowly making his way through all the people (mostly lazy and corrupt) who work in Nottingham Castle.

Later that day the undersheriff appeared unannounced in the donjon and made straightway for the turnkey's apartment. Its squat occupant was sitting astrid a bench and gnawing on half a haunch of mutton. His bulbous, hairless head had no neck beneath but an angrily enlarged goiter that left him resembling nothing so much as a malevolent toad. His repast fairly flew out of his greasy hands at the sight of the visitor.

I'm almost positive the undersheriff becomes the sheriff before the end but I'm not one to sneak a peak. I'm really getting in the mood for this movie.

LITTLE Jack Downham has already filmed his own stunts in Heartbeat and starred in a cat food advert - and he's only seven years old.
But now, the angelic youngster is preparing for the biggest role of his life - starring with Russell Crowe in the latest film version of the Robin Hood story.

Jack, from Farsley, Leeds, will play young Robin in the blockbuster Robin Hood, which reunites Crowe with Gladiator director Ridley Scott.

Crowe recently said that making the movie, which stars Cate Blanchett as Maid Marion, would be like "climbing Mount Everest".

But Jack told the YEP he was "excited" about his role in the film, about the famous outlaw who steals from the rich and gives to the poor.

He said: "I was very happy when my mum told me I had got the role. I like Robin Hood and I know quite a lot about the story.

"I'm going to play little Robin Hood as a child and I'm going to be in a flashback where Robin's dad is dying.I've been to the set already and I met Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott. They were really nice and made me feel at home."

Jack, a pupil at Farfield Primary School, recently flew to Berlin to shoot a cat food advert for Whiskas, featuring the slogan "I love my cat".

The young star is following in the footsteps of his older sister Sophie, nine, who played Katie Slater in the ITV1 drama Unforgiven.

The siblings are pupils at Scala Performing Arts in Horsforth, which is currently training a 40-strong choir to appear in Never Forget: The Musical, featuring the hits of Take That.

Jack and Sophie will be among the young singers who take to the stage when the show arrives at the Bradford Alhambra on July 21.

Other budding stars from the school include nine-year-old Tamsin Mitchell, who was one of three pupils in the Red Riding trilogy on Channel 4.

Tamsin also played young Kimberley Walsh in The Girls Aloud Christmas Party; while Charlotte Thornton, 14, filmed scenes for Heartbeat.

Scala owner Lynne Walker said: "We've had two or three rehearsals already and once we have a couple more, we'll be ready for opening night. We're very proud that a little one like Jack has got such an important role.

"He won't be on screen for long but he's our own little Russell Crowe."

Crowe's Hood film invades beach

The beach has been turned into a film set for the second time this year

Filming of a Robin Hood movie starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett is due to take over much of a Pembrokeshire beach for the next fortnight.

A cast and crew of over 800, plus 130 horses, are due to shoot a major battle scene at Freshwater West.

Although the beach remains open to the public there will be road closures with people living nearby issued passes.

Last month the beach was used as a location for the final film in the Harry Potter series.

That saw a giant cottage made out of shells built on the sands with stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson taking part in the filming.

The Robin Hood film is being made by Universal Pictures and is directed by Sir Ridley Scott.

The filming involves more than 800 people, including 450 extras, 250 crew, marshals and beach cleaners.

It will also include boats and 130 horses, which will be stabled temporarily nearby.

Part of the film centres on the seaweed hut near the main car park.

The film has been shooting at locations across the UK for several months

Permission to use the site has been granted by a number of organisations including the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, the National Trust and Pembrokeshire Council.

A joint statement said: "We recognise that the filming will inevitably cause some disruption in the area as well as great public interest.

"We hope people will help us to accommodate the film companies and we hope that filming on this scale will bring numerous benefits to the local economy, both during filming and following through knock-on tourism spend.

"While it is difficult to quantify it is estimated in the region of £1m, including temporary employment, repeat visits by crews and cast, raising the profile of the area and use of local services - from food to vehicle hire, from laundry services to security."

The park authority said filming would be mainly at the south end of the beach with one day's filming at the seaweed hut.

It has also been told it will be part of the finale and include a battle scene with boats and horses.

The boats are being assembled in Pembroke Dock and temporarily moored off Dale.

Although the beach and coastal path remain open, marshals will ensure people do not wander into camera view.

There will also be marshals on water bikes to liaise with surfers.

The park authority said it had worked with Universal Pictures to protect the sand dunes and beach.

"The routes for access to the beach have been chosen carefully and fencing is in place to direct people," it said.

"Facility bases for the film crews have been selected outside of any Sites of Special Scientific Interest."

I think Russell should rent this "home" while he's there. Save a lot of money man and the kids would love the sea and sand. Not sure about Dani tho.

FILM fans were treated to a spectacle yesterday on the Welsh beach set of the new multi-million dollar Robin Hood movie.

A herd of horses and riders were seen plunging through the surf at the water's edge on Freshwater West in Pembrokeshire - filming has just finished for the final Harry Potter film at the same location.

Onlookers watched as a ship consisting of a wooden frame with furled sails and rigging was wheeled onto the stones at the top of the beach.
But so far the film hasn't attracted the large crowds which flocked to see Harry Potter stars, including Daniel Radcliffe and Helena Bonham-Carter, as they filmed the franchise's next installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

About 70 people had drifted onto the beach to watch yesterday's action.

One bystander said: "The horses riding down the beach caused a bit of a stir. They were galloping through the surf, it looked pretty impressive.

"They seemed to be rehearsing or exercising or something. It looks like they are going to do a piece where Russell Crowe might land on the beach because they've built that huge ship.

"There must have been about 30 horses on the beach and people are saying there are going to be 160 of them at the high-point of the filming."

Last week thatched huts sprung up on the headland overlooking the award-winning beach, and rumours were circulating that lead actor Russell Crowe had insisted on making daily helicopter flights from Windsor to the set.

The beach is rumoured to be the location for a grand battle, which takes place when legendary outlaw Robin Hood arrives home from the Holy Land.

The $175m epic, directed by Blade Runner and Gladiator director Ridley Scott, is set to shoot on Freshwater West for 15 days until June 30.

While the Harry Potter film had just one production base, three have been set for Robin Hood - one for horses, one for cast and crew and another for props.

Casting for the 450 extras began in May, with 1,000 hopefuls lining up at Pembroke Dock for a chance to appear with Crowe and fellow Australian Cate Blanchett, who will play Maid Marian.

Marshals and beach cleaners have also been recruited and 250 crew populate the bases, one of which houses two 6ft pyres and four wooden longboats.

Jennifer Watkins, wife of community councillor Terry Watkins, who lives on a farm close to the beach, said: "It's enormous, absolutely huge. I've never seen anything like it.

"When you watch a film you never think about all the work that goes on behind the scenes and it will be interesting to see the finished result.

"All the caravans are in a field as you're going away from the beach and all the extras and horses are over the Angle side.

"I am a Russell Crowe fan and it would be wonderful to see him, but it's highly unlikely he's going to want to pop into a tiny old farmhouse like ours."

This latest film of the Robin Hood story has undergone several script incarnations, one of which saw the film named Nottingham, with Hood as the enemy and the Sheriff of Nottingham as the protagonist.

Filming for the blockbuster is set to be completed by August for a general release in 2010.

The view of that beach in Pembrokeshire is really breathtaking.

With the excitement of Harry Potter barely over in Pembrokeshire, Freshwater West beach is this week hosting an even bigger Hollywood production.

A cast and crew of more than 800, including 450 extras, have been making their way down to the dunes and 130 horses have been stabled nearby ready to film epic battle scenes for the new Universal Pictures production of Robin Hood.

The likes of Australian actor Russell Crowe and film director Sir Ridley Scott are scheduled to work on various scenes at the unique location, which had been meticulously prepared for their arrival.

A series of thatched huts, traditional coracles and makeshift shelters- constructed alongside the beach's existing seaweed hut to resemble a mediaeval settlement- have been sealed off on the cliffside.

Set back from the beach, among a vast collection of trailers and motor homes, are stacks of specially built longboats and on the beach itself lies part of full sized ship made from timber.

It is understood that the beach location will double up as the film site for scenes set in Dover as well as scenes in France. Special effects at the site are also said to include the use of prosthetic bodies to float in the sea.

While the road to Freshwater West will be closed to traffic during filming (until June 30th), film fans are still able to approach the beach by foot.
