Hooker Aaron Payne at acting half and about 2 metres out, throws a simple dummy and runs through a big gap in the tired Souths defence to score. Conversion attempt by Thurston from almost in front is successful.

20 min: Cowboys dominating possession with a massive 74%. Rabbitohs are simply not in the match at this stage.

24 min: TRY South Sydney Rabbitohs
Centre Beau Champion scores and Souths stem the flow. From acting half and 10m out from the goal line, Rabbitoh Champion spots a gap in the Cowboys defensive line and burrows forward to score 15m wide of the sticks. Conversion attempt by Chris Sandow successful.

30 min: HELD UP - Cowboys centre Willie Tonga gets over the line and is held up on the last tackle.

nrl preview said this game would be all about the defence and they weren't wrong!

second half from league unlimited

Half time: Cowboys 22-6
An impressive performance from the Cowboys, dominating possession to the tune of 65%.
Luke O'Donnell is the pick of the pack while Johnathan Thurston's kicking game has been outstanding.
If Souths are any chance, they have to improve their kicking game and shut down Thurston, but at this stage it looks to be an impossible task, especially given that the Cowboys forwards controlling the ruck.

Second half underway...

42 min: Cowboys make a bust through Travis Burns, he has Thurston on the inside and Graham on the outside, he opts to Omnious signs.

48 min: TRY North Queensland Cowboys
Ashley Graham and John Williams combine out wide with Graham running at the line and then offloading to Williams on the wing. Wiiliams appears to be wrapped up but gets the ball away to Graham who is up off the turf backing up on the sideline. He then crosses to score and improves his position by another 10m. Conversion attempt by Thurston unsuccessful.

51 min: DRIVEN BACK x 2 - For the second time in the match a Souths player is driven back into his in-goal. This time the push is on from Ty Williams, Willie Tonga and the diminutive Matty Bowen.

54 min: TRY North Queensland Cowboys
Matt Bowen makes a simple step from 15m out, easily gets around a couple of would-be defenders to score 12m in from touch. It's turning into a carve up. Conversion attempt by Thurston unsuccessful.
North Queensland Cowboys 30-6

59 min: TRY North Queensland Cowboys
Ty Williams kicks ahead for himself down the left wing from 20m out, and then snatches the ball on the run, beating the defence and improving his position to score a magical try almost behind the sticks. Conversion attempt by Thurston successful.

64 min: Thurston bamboozling the defence, setting up play and creating the opportunity for his outside men. Cowboys eventually too clever for themselves, getting in each other's way and bombing a try - the only way the way it could not have been scored because Souths were simply not part of the play.

63 min: Souths with their best opportunity of the second half with utility Craig Wing making a bust of 80m, only to mown down short of the line by Bowen and John Williams in cover. Souths still with tackles up the sleeve but eventually lose possession in the play-the-ball.

John Williams scores a top winger's try in the corner courtesy of some champagne footy in the Cowboys attacking line, the ball going from left side to right side in the Rabbitohs 20m zone. Conversion attempt by Thurston unsuccessful.

Prop forward Matthew Scott barges over and gets the nod from the video ref following scrutiny over the put down. Conversion attempt 15m in from touch by Thurston is successful.

Craig Wing gets a consolation try for the Rabbitohs, running through a gap from about 15m out. Follows a scrum after a handling error from the Cowboys near the goal line. Conversion attempt by Sandow successful.

Fulltime: Cowboys 46-12
The Cowboys have pummelled the Rabbitohs in convincing fashion.
Thurston and O'Donnell standouts but there wasn't a bad player on the park for the home side.
South Sydney's best was probably Craig Wing but with never more than 40% possession, the visitoes were never in the match.

Better tighten up them jock straps boys or it's gonna be a short season.

That's really a "that depends" question.
It depends on who the teams above them on the ladder are going to be playing and whether they win or lose....it depends on who we will be playing....it may come down to the + / - points.....which I sort of remember what those are, by the way. That takes into account the scoring during the games. You add the points you made and take away the points the teams you played made, and that's what that number is. I think. Something like that. So if you lose by a big margin, it can take away more points even if you have won several but all by a slim margin. I think.

but yes, that does sort of make sense. if the bunnies lose to a higher-seeded team by a very small margin and another higher-seeded team loses to a lower-seeded team by a huge margin, the bunnies could gain, even though they lost.

right?

okay, have we got the times for the next round screwed up again? in what time zone is perth?
in any event, new york and the uk should not be an hour apart in times, no matter what time the game is in oz. there must be a 5 hour difference. i suspect that perth is two hours earlier than sydney, which thus makes the new york game time okay (12 hours earlier instead of the usual 14 hours), but the uk game time should then be 12:30 p.m. saturday afternoon, right?

okay, here's my thinking. this weekend, the storm (in 5th place) are playing the bunnies (9th); the dragons (1st) are up against the cowboys (6th). if the bunnies just barely lose to the storm by a measly 2 points, and the dragons lose to the cowboys by 15, we could advance quite a bit in the standings, the storm would drop quite a lot, the dragons would tumble and the cowboys would also advance.

Perth is two hours BEHIND Sydney, 7 hours in front of me

(12 hours earlier instead of the usual 14 hours), but the uk game time should then be 12:30 p.m. saturday afternoon, right?
