Brisbane Broncos 12 vs South Sydney Rabbitohs 44 Round 19 - Full Time :: July 17th, 2009 6:40pm Brisbane Broncos (12) Tries: Corey Parker, Dave Taylor Goals: Peter Wallace (2/2) South Sydney Rabbitohs (44) Tries: Beau Champion (3), Nathan Merritt (2), Eddy Pettybourne, Fetuli Talanoa, Dave Tyrell Goals: Chris Sandow (5/7), Issac Luke (1/2) Good evening everyone and welcome to Suncorp Stadium for the first clash in tonights double-header between the Brisbane Broncos and the South Sydney Rabbitohs. The Rabbitohs will be keen to carry on last weekends winning form to close the gap to the Top 8, and a match against the Origin-weary Broncos presents an oppportunity they won't want to let slip by. The teams are taking to the field now, a few of the Rabbitohs look like they've been attacked by a drunk hairdresser. KICKOFF - We're underway! The Broncos will have first use of the ball. 2 min: Chris Sandow throws a short pass to Ben Lowe who gets into half a gap and tries to link up with Nathan Merritt steaming through with the tryline in sight - but Merritt can't take the pass and spills it forward. 5 min: Nathan Merritt is trapped in his own in-goal after a last tackle grubber kick from Corey Parker. 6 min: Aaron Gorrell slides into touch while trying to catch the goal-line drop out - the Rabbitohs will have a scrum feed on halfway. 8 min: Nathan Merritt tries to copy Corey Parker with a grubber into the Broncos in-goal but the kick is far too strong and dribbles dead. 9 min: Karmichael Hunt finds himself with a big overlap out wide but throws the ball straight into touch when trying to link up with his winger on halfway. 13 min: The first tryscoring chance of the night for the Broncos - Andrew Gorrell hoists a cross-field kick that's well claimed by Beau Champion ahead of the Broncos chasers. 16 min: TRY South Sydney Rabbitohs Beau Champion opens the scoring with a pretty simple backline move after a couple of repeat sets on the Broncos line. Chris Sandow pushes the conversion attempt in front of the posts. South Sydney Rabbitohs 4-0 18 min: The Rabbitohs nearly make a break up the middle but David Fa'alogo looks to be held back from the play and the ball is lost forward as a result - the Broncos come away with the ball. 19 min: TRY Brisbane Broncos Corey Parker chases through a well-placed grubber kick from Peter Wallace and forces the ball for the try. Wallace adds the extra two. Brisbane Broncos 6-4 22 min: The Broncos get their first penalty of the night, and an easy ride out of their own territory. 24 min: Fetuli Talanoa does well to claim an attacking kick inside his own in-goal ahead of a chasing Justin Hodges. 25 min: TRY South Sydney Rabbitohs A great offload from John Sutton sparks a Rabbitohs attacking raid that finishes with Nathan Merritt streaking away for a try next to the posts. Chris Sandow converts. South Sydney Rabbitohs 10-6 30 min: Dave Taylor gets into the game with a 20-metre hit up and earns his team a penalty at the end of it. 34 min: The Broncos have had all the ball for the last five minutes in good field position but they haven't had a lot of direction on attack - eventually the ball is turned over when Corey Parker tries a miracle offload in a tackle that is ruled to be a knock on. 36 min: Dave Taylor makes a break and swats away a few Rabbitoh defenders before Karmichael Hunt tries a grubber kick that turns the ball over pretty softly to the Rabbitohs. On the next play Jamie Simpson makes a clean break through the Broncos defence and sets up good field position that finishes with Justin Hodges being tackled in his own in-goal. 38 min: TRY South Sydney Rabbitohs Nathan Merritt drifts across field before finding Beau Champion with a short ball off his hip, and Champion strolls through the attempted tackle of Steve Michaels and scores his second try of the night. Chris Sandow adds the extra two. South Sydney Rabbitohs 16-6 HALFTIME: South Sydney Rabbitohs 16 Brisbane Broncos 6 It hasn't been a flashy performance but the Rabbitohs have made the most of their opportunities against a Broncos side that's looking a bit off the pace tonight. The home side need Hunt and Hodges to keep themselves heavily involved, they've looked more dangerous when their Origin reps have gone looking for work. The key man for the Rabbitohs is John Sutton - he's been guiding his side around the park very well so far. The second half is underway! 42 min: Nathan Merritt slices straight through the first line of defence on a kick return before the Broncos eventually get to him. 43 min: John Sutton and Beau Champion try a last tackle run-around play 5 metres out from the Broncos line but the ball goes to ground. 44 min: Peter Wallace gets into space before linking up with Karmichael Hunt, but Hunt throws an intercept pass straight to Beau Champion. 45 min: TRY South Sydney Rabbitohs John Sutton runs to the line before passing to Eddy Pettybourne who finds himself in a yawning gap and he crosses untouched for a pretty easy try. Chris Sandow bounces the conversion attempt in off the posts. South Sydney Rabbitohs 22-6 47 min: The Broncos are penalised for a "late" shot on John Sutton after a clearing kick, giving them another set 20 metres out from the Broncos line. 48 min: VIDEO REF - has Beau Champion got a hat trick?? 48 min: TRY South Sydney Rabbitohs Beau Champion crosses for his third after yet another terrible defensive read by Steve Michaels and Peter Wallace out wide. Chris Sandow kicks the extra two. South Sydney Rabbitohs 28-6 50 min: TRY South Sydney Rabbitohs What a try! It started with some nice offloading out wide before Fetuli Talanoa kicked infield and won the race to the ball himself just ahead of the dead ball line and the chasing Broncos defence. Chris Sandow misses the conversion attempt. South Sydney Rabbitohs 32-6 55 min: TRY Brisbane Broncos Karmichael Hunt, who has moved up to five-eighth, throws a nice flat cut-out pass to Dave Taylor and he can't be stopped from close range. Peter Wallace adds the extras. South Sydney Rabbitohs 32-12 58 min: Dave Taylor undoes his good work with a sloppy fumble in a play-the-ball just as the Broncos were getting a good roll on. 61 min: Karmichael Hunt tries to unleash Dave Taylor on another short run to the tryline but this time Beau Champion and Nathan Merritt are able to pull him down. 62 min: Colin Best makes a good break out wide before trying to link up with his support - the Broncos get in the way of his pass but concede a penalty for accidental offside play in the process. 64 min: PENALTY GOAL South Sydney Rabbitohs The Rabbitohs are awarded a penalty five metres out from the Broncos line and opt to take the two points - Chris Sandow obliges. South Sydney Rabbitohs 34-12 66 min: REFEREE DOWN - Tony De Las Heras has taken a tumble and is snoozing after copping an accidental knee from Corey Parker. De Las Heras got himself in an awkward position trying to get out of the way after a Jamie Simpson break but ended up falling to the ground and tripping Parker up, who was trying to chase in defence. The stretcher has been called for and a replacement referee (Phil Haines) will join the action. 67 min: A wide pass to Fetuli Talanoa takes a wicked bounce into touch when Talanoa would have found himself with plenty of space in front of him if he'd been able to pick it up. 69 min: TRY South Sydney Rabbitohs Dave Tyrell hits the ball at pace and spins through a couple of defenders before crashing across the line. Issac Luke misses the conversion attempt. South Sydney Rabbitohs 38-12 71 min: The Rabbitohs nearly break through again with some flashy play out wide but the final pass goes to ground and the Broncos come away with the ball. 72 min: Peter Wallace makes another clean break but he doesn't have any support with him and the Rabbitohs defence eventually shuts him down. 75 min: TRY South Sydney Rabbitohs Chris Sandow stabs a kick towards the Broncos in-goal and it takes a nasty bounce to fool the first wave of chasers, leaving Nathan Merritt to swoop on the loose ball for a try under the posts. Issac Luke converts. South Sydney Rabbitohs 44-12 78 min: Chris Sandow nearly takes an intercept that would have seen him streak away for a try - but he makes up for the miss by taking Corey Parker into touch on the next tackle. Craig Wing Announcement 21 Jul 2009 The South Sydney Rabbitohs have agreed to a request from Craig Wing to release him from the final two years of his contract. Craig Wing will finish his NRL career at the end of 2009 to take up a highly lucrative two-year deal with Japanese Rugby. He had approached the Club for a release two weeks ago on compassionate grounds, and after much discussion, the Board agreed to his request. "Craig's personal issues have been well documented over recent months," Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson said today. "The contract with Japanese Rugby will go a long way to helping his personal situation and we respect that and wish him well in his further football career. "It has always been our desire to have Craig see out his contract with our Club, but after careful consideration over the past fortnight, the Board and Management of the Club understand that it was in Craig's best interests that he be granted a release. "We certainly wish Craig all the very best in his transition to Rugby Union in Japan from 2010." Craig will finish his NRL career having played over 250 first grade games for both the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Sydney Roosters. During his career he has won an NRL premiership, played for Australia in 16 Test matches and represented NSW on 12 occasions. Speaking from England, Crowe said there were no hard feelings from his point of view, but conceded the Rabbitohs would suffer by allowing Wing to leave early. "No club can lose the services of a player like Craig Wing without it having an effect," Crowe said. But, the Hollywood hero maintained the club had done all it could to help Wing's financial situation. Wing cited failed third-party agreements and the loss of $1.5 million in bad investments as a factor in his decision to leave Souths and sign a $1.4 million Japan rugby deal. Crowe said he, personally, and the club made every effort to ensure Wing was happy at Souths. "I know how much the club has extende d themselves for Craig," he said. "As with all the players, I have taken his time at the club personally and with the coach, our medical department, the CEO and the chairman, we have all done our best for Craig as a Rabbitoh." Crowe added that his beloved club had been strengthened through Wing's involvement over the past two years. "We have had the benefit of Craig mentoring our group of young hookers and halves for two years," he said. "(Issac) Luke, (Chris) Sandow, (John) Sutton, (Luke) Capewell, (Jamie) Simpson and (Beau) Falloon have all risen to the challenges of first grade and excelled in that time with Craig there as a role model setting the standard in the gym and on the field." During his time with Souths, Wing, 29, played with constant injury. "Craig has had to endure five major operations and, under the care and guidance of (Souths physiotherapist) Errol Alcott, has rid himself of the constant and niggling injuries that he arrived with," Crowe said. "Craig's selection at Origin level this year is a testament to his persistence and professionalism. "He leaves Souths stronger and healthier than when he arrived and he leaves a club that has also gone from strength to strength in that time." C'mon get happy! We'll make you happy!
