Over at the Awards Daily Oscar blog is a Time Online list of the top 100 films of the oughts, ie; the last nine years. Man is that list a mixed bag but Gladiator is on it at number 32 I believe. Sorry folks I might have gotten that number wrong, but the film is somewhere in the thirties. As for the number one film I think it should be Lives of Others not Cache. These sort of lists reflect the subjectivity of the compilers. As we know making lists of this or that on the internet is seriously overdone. |

As you probably know Isis has done completely new screenshots for Gladiator. The original pages on kaspinet focused on Russell as Maximus but the new images
detail the film as a whole. She has done over 3000 new images, 1000 more than we have in our current section on the film. The blu ray images are stunning
having an almost 3D quality to them. The images aren't "live" yet, I've just finished the Battle of Carthage and the big "My name is
gladiator" reveal but I wanted to post another teaser.

WoW! That's looking mahvelous, baby, can't wait to see the rest. Gladiator is truly magnificent on Blu Ray and I'm sure Isis has done her usual
wonderful job at capturing it in stills.

the BluRay caps are darker. I can actually see more detail in Isis' originals.I felt that too with the first teaser but even tho this too is darker it is much clearer looking. It's actually quite beautiful and I agree about the 3-D look. I love my blu ray player and all my BR Russell movies. I was actually able to see Ben fight those Indians where I couldn't with the regualr DVD because it was too dark. Go figure!

Yes, they are darker because bluray we are seeing true black. Think of it like the many shades from black to white in a greyscale photo. Cat one of the scenes
that show this off to the best effect is at the end when we see Juba and Haken and the rest of the guys in the cells under the colosseum. Remember when
Commodus walks through and the camera pans across the guys and all you could see was Juba's eyes? Now you see many layers of that darkness and you can
actually see him in more detail. Yes, it's dark but the crispness of the images outdo any problems with darkness.
kaspi I await the final unveiling. What we do in life... echoes in eternity.

I'm also thinking that the true black and the darker tones help create the layered or 3-D type effect. On the bigger screens with the Blu Ray player the
pictures just pop out at you, it's wonderful.
swept, I just realized that while I of course have Yuma on DVD I don't have it on Blu Ray. I think that needs to be rectified.

Thanks for the explanation, Isis. That makes it clearer (pun intended And I do agree there somehow is a dimensionality, a depth, to the bluray captures that there isn't with the dvd ones.

Everybodys' monitors (and everybodys' monitor settings) are different, too. Isis's old caps look very light to me, on my monitor, and so the
Blu-Ray look just right.
Boy, do they look just right.....

Isis, did you encounter any of the undesirable artifacts the Blu-Ray fanboys were arguing about a few months back ? Are they in fact making much ado about
something that may only last a frame ? (ie the disappearing flaming catapult shots in Germania)

Ro, I honestly believe you would need to be watching it side-by-side with an earlier version, or specifically be looking for the missing bits. I missed
nothing.

I agree. After a couple of viewing I remembered that review so I made a point of trying to see that problem but I guess my eyesight isn't as good as
theirs.
