The General's left boot | ||
|
My daughter got this for me last week...came in the mail yesterday...and a dear CroweCrosser suggested I might post here about it.
So here I be's....anyway... OK....where I've been with the booted foot is watching, um, Gladiator. I, in the first place, wanted the sheer aesthetic pleasure of having it on my foot on the recliner rest and being able to look over it at the TV screen. I, in the second place, needed to make a somewhat in-depth study of the bootiness of Maximus and have come to a decided decision...which is that this is the boot he wears as General in the Germania scenes. He wears this same style of boot all thru the film except for the mass battle in Zucchabar when he wears a much shorter one, just over the ankle, and in a lighter color. He wears this brown color in Germania and in the Are You Not Entertained scene, and the scene on the rooftop with Juba. However, when in Rome, even tho it's this same style, his boots are black to match his other leather. So the manure is NOT from the Carthage scene. This boot was really, um, WORN...like in a milling- around, muddy battle. So that leaves out the Entertained and the rooftop scenes wherein there was no manure nor mud. Which leaves..ta dah...the General! I think I kinda like that as in epis and all, he's always dressed as the General. You can tell they were wiped once upon a time, but they still have ground-in dirt and around the edge of the sole where it's connected to the top of the boot, is a layer of black mud...which is, of course, from the opening battle sequence. And he walked where horses had been...which also fits. He obviously also did a lot of sliding back and forth while wearing them and quick turning movements. So...sigh...I am well and Generally booted! And I'm happy about it. I have also a story called surprisingly enough "The General's Boot" rolling around in my brain at the moment. It's, well, gonna be about a woman who gets the boot from Studio City via England...which is where it does come from...and she puts her foot in it...as I, of course, hadda do yesterday...and then, um, stuff happens. There is, howsomever, ANOTHER CroweCrosser who tells me I must add to my Cort and my Marshall storylines before putting yet another iron in the fire. I have at least 6 or 7 in there now, heh heh. Anyway...I was playing around with it last evening, taking pictures...so here's one of those..I'm going to get a glass case for it. One must take good care of one's horse manure! .
And this is my foot in it...
And THIS is an attempt at as much of a contrast as I could make with it...a very, very, very male thing suddenly in a very female world...

From The Swallow's Nest, a Christian blog
website...
Third, in my own life I've been touched by what I believe to be the Spirit in a movie theatre. I've written about that here on this blog and I will continue to do so. Sometimes when I read certain Scriptures my imagination is drawn to a scene from a film I've seen and then I can more easily connect this ancient Scripture to my own life in the 21st century. For example, there is a seen near the end of The Gladiator where Russell Crowe's character is slipping out of consciousness in the arena and he begins to approach a large door that is opened to him, then he feels a fresh breeze sweeping across a wheat field, he runs his fingers across the wheat, and he sees his young son and beautiful wife come running towards him and he knows that this is heaven. He is going to die, but in his death he will find peace. Well, that scene for me was transformative as I gave further thought to the fine line that exists between my life here and my life to come. My father had a quadruple bypass. Four years later I showed him Gladiator, and he immediately identified with the door in the wall.

he immediately identified with the door in the wall.Wow. This was from when he was on the operating table? And he remembered it? That's kinda cool.....in a way. Not cool that he had to have surgery, but....you know.

Wait---Joimus---are you saying you somehow got Maximus's actual boot??? How on earth???!!! And only one??
That's wonderful! My gosh.....and are you also telling me you didn't put your nose down in it before you put your foot in......just because? Yes, yes, I know how it probably smells.....but still. Was this a birthday present? Or is your daughter just a terrific kid? :)

Yep, I'm sayin' it's the genuine boot he wore in the Germania scenes, I am, I am. I have no idea what happened to the right boot. They were only offering the left. But it came with the prop registration number and a raised seal outta the English prop dept. that handles such things. And, yes, I did smell it (I spent my teen years on an angus farm so I'm used to such things) but the dried, um, 'stuff' is SO dried now that it doesn't really have much scent at all left to it, so the boot mostly smells of leather. No, it wasn't a birthday present (that's in January)...she just knows how much I love Maximus and she wanted me to have it. It was $400. For me, it's not even a Russell thing, not really. I don't look at it and think, "Golly gee, Russ had this on his foot!" Nope...I look at it and think, "Ahhhhh....my General!" heh heh heh I know you understand. Jo |

Congrats on acquiring the boot Joimus. I'm envious.
I know I've not been around a lot lately so I've brought a present. I finished this a couple weeks ago and only this weekend stretched it so I could photograph it. This was the perfect physical therapy to help me through my recent surgery.

That's just lovely! You're so talented.
I'm not sure I got to see your last project after it was finished......I'll have to look tomorrow and see if it's here and I just can't remember it at this time of night..... |

Congratulations on the boot, Joimus. How cool that it has dirt and mud. I wonder who has the other boot, or maybe its just in very poor shape. Or maybe,
Commodus threw it off his balcony in a fit of jealousy..

MM, my last project was a closeup of my daughter's mini dachsund so I didn't share it.
Ro, this will go in the living room. I keep all my Russelly stuff in the Sanctorum but because this is ART it can go anywhere. The finished piece is on 18 ct (per inch) Aida cloth and is 9 1/2" x 14" or 252 x 165 stitches. It tool less than 6 months because half of that time I did nothing but sit and watch TV while my arm was recovering. What we do in life... echoes in eternity.

wow! i'm impressed! i've done a little bit of needlework and know how much patience it takes; i've never even begun to contemplate thinking about considering attempting something of this magnitude, and both my arms are in regular working order (well, for being 52 years old, that is). great therapy for your ailing arm and your head! regarding rusty's post about the museum, isn't the pic maxie vintage? becks aka maxiesvelvet you can't eat your pride or cleanse your soul of what is you -

That's beautiful Isis, another masterpiece. And as many times as I have looked at that piece of art in all the years since Gladiator came out, I've
never once noticed the crowe! LOL.

Lovely job, Isis. Thanks for sharing. I'd love to see it with the frame too.

Thanks guys. I almost didn't finish it because I could tell it wasn't going to have the detail I like but when I decided where it was going I kept
going. It will hang in a spot that won't encourage an up-close look and at a distance it looks much better.
It was from a pattern I found on the Internet with a little bit of tweaking on my part. Becks, your arms are 2 years younger than mine. In my case, my needlework is my excuse to sit in front of the TV. I'm an ex-smoker and when I quit I had to find something to do with my hands and I had always liked cross stitch but hadn't done anything like this before. Now I've gotten two of Maximus, one of Captain Jack and two or three of Russell. Any excuse will do. What we do in life... echoes in eternity.
