When we were down in LA for the Oscar Party, I examined (at much closer range than the public were intended to be but Gayle-lynne and I were sneaky...er...circumspect) Maximus' cuirass which was on display. However, I don't recall any evidence of errant ginger curls caught in said cuirass.
So.....ya beat us to it, didya, phoenix?

The Hollywood memorabilia auction is over (thanks, Ro, for posting about it).
The shield from the Tigris fight went for $18,000. tigris shield The sword from the Tigris fight went for $14,000. tigris sword But it's the Star Wars fans who are truly crazed. There was a blurb in the newspaper about the auction, and Luke Skywalker's light saber sold for $240,000.

Wow, that's a nice chunk of change for the sword and shield. I gotta check on how much the sword from Flash Gordon went. My boyfriend really wanted that.
:)
As for the lightsaber, I wouldn't pay for it, but I'm glad it went for a big price. That's the prize from the original Star Wars movies. Bill Gates is a big fan, wonder if he got it. :) Hugs, Izzy |

Quite some time ago we found on EBay the original sword that Maximus pulled from his saddle during the Germania fight (after having lost the first one when it
was stuck in the tree). I emailed the seller because I knew who had the original because I had my hand on it the night of the Gladiator Oscar party.
Graham, the guy who came dressed as the Roman Centurian stood behind me during the Oscar telecast because he couldn't sit while wearing his armor. He told
us that the sword he was wearing was this one, and it had been given to him by John Eagle who just happened to be sitting across the table (and next to Cat).
Remember John was one of the technical advisors for the film and was our special guest at the party.
Graham is the big guy on the right in this picture and John is the guy in the green coat
Turned out it was Graham selling the sword only because his son was ill and needed an operation. He was asking $500 and didn't receive any bids and I
remember wishing I had the money to buy the sword and then turn around and give it back to him.

yes, it was! I remember calling Snuggie on my cell phone and just raising it in the air so she could hear the screams and squeals after Russell won the Oscar.
She was thrilled and very soon became a prolific member of our community. Her husband, of course, thought I was nuts!

An old review of Gladiator popped up today in my Google search. I was glad to see it, because I remembered one particularly apt phrase, but somehow I had lost
it out of my archives. Shall I bold it ? No, you'll know what it is when you see it....
A big-budget summer epic with money to burn and a scale worthy of its golden Hollywood predecessors, Ridley Scott's Gladiator is a rousing, grisly, action-packed epic that takes moviemaking back to the Roman Empire via computer-generated visual effects. While not as fluid as the computer work done for, say, Titanic, it's an impressive achievement that will leave you marveling at the glory that was Rome, when you're not marveling at the glory that is Russell Crowe. Starring as the heroic general Maximus, Crowe firmly cements his star status both in terms of screen presence and acting chops, carrying the film on his decidedly non-computer-generated shoulders as he goes from brave general to wounded fugitive to stoic slave to gladiator hero. Gladiator's plot is a whirlwind of faux-Shakespearean machinations of death, betrayal, power plays, and secret identities (with lots of faux-Shakespearean dialogu ladled on to keep the proceedings appropriately "classical"), but it's all briskly shot, edited, and paced with a contemporary sensibility. Even the action scenes, somewhat muted but graphic in terms of implied violence and liberal bloodletting, are shot with a veracity that brings to mind-believe it or not-Saving Private Ryan, even if everyone is wearing a toga. As Crowe's nemesis, the evil emperor Commodus, Joaquin Phoenix chews scenery with authority, whether he's damning Maximus's popularity with the Roman mobs or lusting after his sister Lucilla (beautiful but distant Connie Nielsen); Oliver Reed, in his last role, hits the perfect notes of camp and gravitas as the slave owner who rescus Maximus from death and turns him into a coliseum star. Director Scott's visual flair is abundantly in evidence, with breathtaking shots and beautiful (albeit digital) landscapes, but it's Crowe's star power that will keep you in thrall-he's a tru gladiator, worthy of his legendary status. Hail the conquring hero! -Mark Englehart

Ah, yes, I remember that review, and I happen to agree.
We've all heard about the gladiator schools in Italy, well, now gladiators will actually 'fight' in the Colosseum for the first time in 2000 years! http://www.dailymail.co.u...eum-time-2-000-years.html Gladiators set to return to Colosseum for first time in 2,000 years
By Nick Pisa
Gladiators are set to make a return to the ancient Colosseum in Rome for the first time in 2,000 years. But it's just for mock fights, organisers emphasised.
Council officials say the proposed plan would not be a 'carnival' but a very serious affair. Enlarge
Maximus come alive: Russel Crowe in 'Gladiator' Umberto Broccoli, Rome's archaeology councillor and TV presenter, said: 'We need to bring museums alive and speak to the public. We will recreate the atmosphere as it was then.' Mr Broccoli added: 'We need to recreate the sights, smells and sounds that were there at the time on the streets.
'This is the only way to create an atmosphere in a museum that will not be forgotten in a hurry.' Rome has several modern day gladiator schools were 'students' can train as a real life Russell Crowe and pretend to be his hero character Maximus. Whether Russell Crowe himself could be tempted to make an appearance remains to be seen.
Ready for action again: The Colosseum in Italy will see gladiator fights for the first time in 2,000 years Mr Broccoli added that the proposal would not be tacky - although it had not yet been established whether the mock fights would take place on a purpose-built stage in the centre of the arena or outside. He said the gladiators would wear original costumes and they would use the same techniques and methods as the sporting heroes of ancient Rome. And he insisted it would not be 'some form of Disneyland'. Mr Broccoli said: 'We need to ensure that museums are not simply thought of as places where old things are kept and where things are often badly explained. He suggested that as the gladiators staged their battles, visitors would hear descriptions by Lucius Anneous Seneca, the first century philosopher and statesman and who was also an aide to mad Roman emperor Nero. Sergio Iacomoni, who has run a gladiator school in Rome since 1994, said: 'We have 200 students and are more than willing to take part in this. This is
a real passion for us.'

I don't know why people who know so little feel they have to set the rest of us all straight.....although I suppose that's what blogs are for, for
people to express their opinion when otherwise no one would listen to them.
I totally agree with your editorial comments....although you missed one-- when a movie gets practically universal acclaim, wins the Oscar for best picture and isn't very good,Of course, this one person is right and everyone else is wrong. Sigh. I don't know why so many people are down on the strobing effect in the first battle. I liked that. I think it conveys emotion better than straight forward shooting would have done. As far as the execution of Maximus' family, that is historically accurate--that is exactly what they quite frequently did and it was not only to deter others, but to prevent family members from coming back for revenge later (because they are dead), and so that the Emperor could then seize the transgressor's property. This Certain people (who I will not name)made me chuckle. An odd way of putting it. He can't name them, can he?
